Homemade Aluminum-Free Baking Powder
Baking powder is a key ingredient in many bread, cornbread, cake and cookie recipes. However, most commercially produced baking powder contains aluminum - sodium aluminum sulfate to be exact. Instead of paying someone else to make your baking powder with aluminum, make your own safer and less expensive baking powder at home quickly and easily.
baking soda and cream of tartar
together until well combined.
Yield: One tablespoon of baking powder.
Consider keeping these ingredients in your long-term food storage instead of baking powder. Combined, you will have an early expiration- but separate and mix small batches at a time for a much longer shelf life.
Alternatively, if you want to make larger amounts and store the mixed baking powder add one part of cornstarch for every one part of baking soda (or every two parts of cream of tartar). This will absorb any moisture from the air, and prevent the baking powder from reacting before you need it. Store in an air-tight container.
