Avoid, Halt and Reverse Alzheimer’s with Coconut Oil

(The Best Years in Life) Naturopaths and other natural health authorities have been telling us for years that coconut oil can not only slow Alzheimer’s, it can also stop it and in many instances even reverse it. Now, recent science and real life experiences have confirmed what they have told us. With organic coconut oil, you may be able to forget Alzheimer’s and it may no longer be a death sentence!
Alzheimer’s and dementia have been growing at alarming rates thanks to our aging population, widespread use of statin drugs and the continued inundation of toxins in our food, air and water. It is estimated that current figure of 5 million plus people with Alzheimer’s in the U.S. will triple by 2050. Despite optimistic announcements of advances, mainstream medicine continues to be thwarted at actually finding a cure or reversing Alzheimer’s and dementia. The good news, however, is that nature has had an answer all along: coconut oil.
If we look at Alzheimer’s disease as a “type 3″ diabetes and an insulin resistance problem, coconut oil makes a lot of sense. Coconut oil is believed to encourage the body to produce organic matter to provide an energy source for brain cells and is in fact a rich source of ketone energy, an alternate form of energy to the brain. In fact, pharmaceutical companies are currently trying to develop drugs that mimic the same “ketonic” effect that can be achieved via coconut oil and a high-fat diet.
What science is has found
In an “in vitro” (petri dish) study titled “Coconut Oil Attenuates the Effects of Amyloid-β on Cortical Neurons In Vitro” published recently in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, researchers found that coconut oil may alleviate and/or regress cognitive deficits associated with aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s.
According to the researchers, “The rationale for using coconut oil as a potential AD [Alzheimer’s Disease] therapy is related to the possibility that it could be metabolized to ketone bodies that would provide an alternative energy source for neurons, and thus compensate for mitochondrial dysfunction.”
The researchers found that coconut oil protected against amyloid plaque buildup and concluded that “Considering that the medium chain triglyceride found in coconut known as caprylic acid does cross the blood-brain barrier, and has recently been found to have anti-convulsant, in addition to, ketogenic effects, coconut oil likely does have a neuroprotective effect.”
An “in vivo” (in the actual body) human study found that brain function was improved after only one dose and study participants reported significant improvements in Alzheimer’s disease after 45 and 90 days of treatment with medium chain triglycerides from coconut oil.
In another study, Canadian researcher Stephen Cunnane used PET scans to determine that ketones are indeed a possible alternative brain fuel.
Real life experiences
Though science does not give as much credence to anecdotal evidence, “observation” is a key component of the scientific process, and when it comes to coconut oil the evidence that has been observed is so overwhelming it simply cannot be ignored. Examples include:
- In one of the first widely reported successes with coconut oil, Dr. Mary Newport, MD, dramatically reversed her husband’s symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease after just two weeks of adding coconut oil to his diet.
- In 2007, a man in England suddenly quickly deteriorated over a one year period to the point that he could barely do anything for himself and he no longer recognized his own daughter. After his son watched the YouTube video of Dr. Mary Newport’s success with her husband, they decided to try their father on six tablespoons a day.
“Within a month his mood completely changed,” his daughter reported. “He became calmer and relaxed. He started shaving, then bathing on his own. Then one day he gave me a hug and said my name.”
- Ian Blair Hamilton and his wife, medical researcher Cassie Bond, made a YouTube video about how coconut oil quickly gave Ian his brain back and reversed his depression after he had begun a downward spiral of Alzheimer’s.
In other testimonials and reports:

to take coconut oil.
And those are just a tiny handful of the literally thousands of testimonials and anecdotal coconut oil success reports.
The Bruce Fife “Alzheimer’s Battle Plan”
Naturopathic Doctor Bruce Fife developed an extremely effective multi-part battle plan for fighting and conquering Alzheimer’s and dementia which he outlined in his book “Stop Alzheimer’s Now”. The first step in the Alzheimer’s Battle Plan is to raise ketone levels by consuming at least 5 tablespoons (74 ml) of coconut oil every day. Fife recommends that the oil should be taken with food and either used in food preparation or taken separately by the spoonful like a dietary supplement. Two tablespoons of coconut oil should always be consumed in the morning at breakfast when ketone levels are at their lowest. The remaining 3 or more tablespoons can be divided up between lunch and dinner in any manner desired.
Other important steps in the plan are:
• Low-Carb Diet – Adopt a low-carb eating plan that matches your fasting blood glucose level.
• Oral Health – Visit a (preferably holistic) dentist and correct any existing infections. Oil pull for 15-20 minutes at least once a day, preferably before meals.
• Dietary Supplements – Take an iron-free multiple vitamin and mineral supplement daily that supplies at least the RDA of all the major nutrients except iron. In addition, take: 400 mg of alpha-lipoic acid, 100 mg of CoQ10, 300 mg of magnesium, 500 mg of vitamin C , 2,000 mg of L-Carnitine and 450 mg of curcumin.
• Red Palm Oil – Red palm oil is a rich source of natural protective antioxidants that are helpful in fighting oxidative stress and calming inflammation. Fife recommends 1 tablespoon of red palm oil daily.
• Fish – Eat one or two 4-ounce servings of fish per week or take 1 gram of krill oil for essential fatty acids.
• Vitamin D – Get daily sun exposure as much as possible to maintain proper vitamin D levels. During the winter when sun exposure is reduced, or when you are unable to get daily sunshine, consume 1 tablespoon of cod liver oil daily or take a vitamin D3 supplement which provides 2,000-5,000 IU/day.
Naturopathic PhD/MD Ken O’Neal’s experience:
In an interview on The Best Years in Life Radio Show, Naturopathic PhD and MD Ken O’Neal reported that people he has consulted with who have followed recommendations built around the Fife battle plan are having great success. One of the first people to begin following the plan was a middle-aged man whose condition had deteriorated to the point that he was unable to log on to his beloved internet, much less blog and communicate intelligibly.
Once he began following the recommendations for coconut oil and other items, his improvement was almost immediate and today he is back online happily blogging and typing away.
Other items which may help treat and reverse Alzheimer’s
Animal studies have shown very promising results for Ashwaganda when it comes to Alzheimer’s and cognitive impairment. As reported by Life Extension Foundation (LEF), in one rodent study, group of rats with the condition were administered a placebo or ashwagandha root for 30 days. After 20 days, the mice receiving the ashwagandha started exhibiting improved cognitive function.
They were able to navigate through maze tests from which they had difficulty prior to supplementation, demonstrating an improvement in spatial memory and learning. The rats also experienced a reduction in amyloid plaque in various parts of the brain including the cortex and the hippocampus (the area in which memories are stored).
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
In a rodent study conducted in 2008 at the University of California, Irvine, mice with the rodent equivalent of Alzheimer’s were given high doses of niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and it was 100% effective at restoring cognitive function. A current human study is underway. Niacinimide is considered to be one of the safest of all supplemental vitamins and minerals and high doses are well tolerated.
Colloidal gold is revered for its abilities to lift brain fog and enhance memory, mood and focus. Furthermore, in the study “Effect of Colloidal Metallic Gold on Cognitive Functions: A Pilot Study” published in the “Journal of Frontier Sciences”, subjects scored a whopping average increase of 24 points on standardized IQ tests after being given colloidal gold daily for four months.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego provided ground-breaking proof that a natural protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) can prevent and even reverse Alzheimer’s. BDNF, which is now available in supplement form, can be increased by exercise and a healthy diet. Prebiotics and large amounts of vitamin A are also said to increased natural production of BDNF.
