 Beat and Treat ADHD and ADD Without Prescription Drugs

(Best Years in Life) ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a condition with symptoms such as inattentiveness, impulsivity, and often hyperactivity. Adults with ADHD may have trouble managing time, being organized, setting goals, and holding down a job  Both children and adults can have ADHD, but the symptoms almost always begin in childhood. Fortunately, such conditions may be prevented or improved with diet and supplementation instead of risky mainstream drugs.

ADHD was formerly called ADD and for a period of time both the terms ADHD and ADD were used, with ADD the latter being used to describe attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity. Today, mainly the term ADHD is used regardless of hyperactivity. Though ADD and ADHD may in part be syndromes created to describe age-old problems and publicized in order to sell drugs, it is also likely that modern living conditions are resulting in an increase in childhood and adult behavior and attention problems.

The suspected culprits for increased behavior and attention problems are multiple: excessive sugar and high fructose corn syrup, lack of vital nutrients, increased environmental toxins, increased vaccinations, food additives such as MSG, GMO crops, and exposure to microwaves and other electro magnetic radiation. In addition, lack of proper nurturing and parenting likely plays a big role as well.

One must remember that the brain is a vital organ just like the heart, lungs, liver, etc., and it needs good nutrition to develop and function properly. Sadly, today's SAD diet of fast foods, snacks & junk foods, microwavable meals and processed foods on the grocers' shelves has left most of our kids, and us, woefully deficient in a great many nutrients the body was designed to utilize. Sometimes the consequences manifest themselves early on, and other times it is down the road a ways. But you can bet that there will be consequences if not addressed and corrected.

A Proper Diet Can Help Avoid and Manage ADHD

The first thing to do is to help avoid and manage ADHD is to cut one's consumption of sugar to a minimum. Excessive refined sugar has been linked heavily to ADHD, bipolar, depression and other mental disorders. Also avoid alcohol, caffeine, and refined foods.

Be sure to Include plentiful essential fatty acids (EFAs), especially omega 3. Research has indicated that omega 3 deficiency can play a crucial role in the development of ADHD and other mental disorders.  Some dietary sources of omega 3's and other EFAs include cold water fish such as salmon, herring, and mackerel. Other sources include krill oil, coconut oil, grapeseed extract and chia seeds. The aforementioned fish are also good sources of beneficial lean protein, as are free range organic chicken and turkey.

Though low-carb and no-carb foods and diets have been popular in recent years, carbohydrates are an essential energy source for the body and mind. The key is to insure that you are receiving the right kinds of carbohydrates. Unhealthy carbohydrates result in too much sugar which causes the problems we are trying to prevent. Healthy carbohydrates can be found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Examples are: apples, oranges, peaches, grapefruit, carrots, Brussels sprouts, beans, and whole wheat bread.

Natural Supplements for ADHD

Supplement with magnesium (one a 1-2 ratio with calcium) if you are unsure that you are getting enough of this vital mineral. Various studies have indicated that anywhere from 80 to 95% of us are deficient in magnesium and symptoms include mental disorders, light or restless sleep, daytime sleepiness, and inability to concentrate.

Some other suggested supplements:

Managing Stress and Other Lifestyle Tips

When it comes to lifestyle and managing ADHD, a foremost consideration is avoiding and managing stress. Stress and worrying are unhealthy and may very well increase ADHD symptoms. Here are some things you can do to help avoid and relieve stress:

*Take time to "stop and smell the roses". In other words, take pleasant breaks which enable you to take your mind off everyday concerns.
*Make your home, or at least a room in your home" a stress-free haven.
*Get a healthy amount of sleep every mght (or day) in a darkened room.
*Get regular exercise and/or physical activitiy, which have a world of healthy benefits including releasing stress-relieving compounds called endorphins into the bloodstream
*Spend time enjoying the outdoors. When possible, take off your shoes and go barefoot in the soil or on the grass (It's called "grounding" - look it up!).
*Gardening or otherwise tending to plants is especially calming and has the added benefit of exposing your body to beneficial soil micro-organisms - not to mention the possible benefits of pleasant colors, scents and maybe even healthy food.
*Have plenty of houseplants both in your home and office. Houseplants are proven stress relievers.
*Practice yoga, tapping or other stress and pain-relieving techniques.

Another essential lifestyle consideration is to avoid exposure to environmental toxins, particularly pesticides. Pesticides have been strongly linked to ADHD in children.
