Body Care Starts in the Liver

(The Best Years in Life) We have been taught to be a nation of consumers -- use it up, throw it out, and get another one! Many of us seem to think there is no need to take care of anything, even our bodies, because everything can be replaced. When our joints are stiff and inflamed we can buy new ones made of plastic and metal. We can even buy a new liver when the old one is destroyed. But is this really the best way to live? Maybe people end up with new body parts because they never learned how to care for their old ones. Maybe if we learn how to care for our original body parts, we won’t have to put new ones on our credit cards.

Caring for the body starts with the liver

The liver is the body’s interface with the world. It’s what keeps us from dying as a result of living in pollution and eating foods laden with pesticides and chemicals. The liver is a large organ that sits just under the rib cage on the right side of the body, and although it has many other jobs, its primary one is to keep the body detoxified.

Most of us probably don’t think much about our livers as we breathe polluted air and swallow prescription drugs, alcohol, and genetically altered and chemicalized food. But livers can become overwhelmed with toxins to the point where they are seriously damaged. Once the liver is overwhelmed, toxins back up into the body and become lodged in organs, tissues and joints, causing many symptoms.

When the liver become congested enough, the body tries to find another way to get rid of toxins. If toxins have built up in the skin, the result is acne, rashes, blotches and even fevers. If the overload is in the lungs, coughing, sneezing, and mucus secretion is the result. Toxins backed up in the digestive tract lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Toxins lodged in the joints produce pain and arthritis. These symptoms are the body’s way of saying it can no longer handle the toxic abuse.

Dr. Sherry Rogers, M.D. puts it bluntly, “Environmental toxins cause all human disease…from high blood pressure, heart failure, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, arthritis, or Alzheimer’s disease to fibromyalgia, degenerative discs, Parkinson’s disease, depression, fatigue, irritable bowel, loss of libido, colitis, asthma, eczema, prostatitis, esophagitis, atrial fibrillation, GERD (gastro espophigeal disease), hearing loss, headaches, recurrent sinus infections, ear and throat infections, diabetes, cancer and more.” These thoughts of Dr. Rogers are echoed by many health experts around the world.

With an overloaded liver, weight loss becomes almost impossible because, in addition to detoxification, another job of the liver is to burn fat. When the liver is overworked trying to detoxify, it can no longer burn fat, and weight loss comes to a standstill or turns into weight gain.

When the symptoms begin adding up, a visit to a traditional doctor is usually the next step. But chances are he only knows how to prescribe drugs and doesn’t have a clue that you are full of toxins and your liver is overwhelmed. Take enough of his drugs and some of the symptoms may lessen, but you will probably not get better, because the drugs further slow the detoxification process and are just more chemical toxins added to your already overloaded system. When you take drugs to mask symptoms, it is just a matter of time until serious disease shows up.

Toxic overload comes with life in the modern world

Accumulating a toxic overload doesn’t require many years of living. Research has shown that even newborn babies have more than a hundred known toxic chemicals inside their bodies.

What are these chemicals? The ones that can be found in almost everyone come from plastics, pesticides (found in almost every bite of non-organic food), mercury (from dental fillings, vaccines, paint and pesticides), aluminum (from aluminum cans and food wraps, all conventional pickles and pickled products, antacids and antiperspirants), trichloroethylene (from having clothes and carpets dry cleaned) cadmium (from smoking and inhaling second hand smoke), toluene (from nail polishes and removers, inks, cleaners, glues and much more). Exhaust from faulty furnaces and diesel, and chemicals used in home insulation have left their mark on almost everyone, too.

This list does not include the thousands of toxins added to processed foods and food served in restaurants, in personal care products such as shampoos and lotions, in products used to clean the home like window cleaner and cleanser, and in prescription drugs. Even low quality vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements and other products sold as 'healthy' can contain toxic solvents and pesticides.

This is not an exhaustive list, and it is almost a certainty that the average adult body contains not hundreds of toxins but thousands. Toxic overload is the reason more than ten percent of the population feels awful on a regular basis, and no one really knows the full extent of the damage these chemicals are causing to people now and will cause to future generations. One thing that is known is that 40 percent of the U.S. population is expected to have cancer at some time. Research has already documented the connection between toxic chemicals like plastics and pesticides and cancer in lab rats.


You can reverse toxic overload

It’s clearly time to come to the rescue of your liver by beginning a cleansing and detoxifying program. This regimen begins by decreasing the amount of toxins coming into the body while increasing the amount of toxins going out of the body.

Decreasing incoming toxins begins by examining every aspect of your life to see where the toxins are coming from and how you can drastically reduce them. It involves shifting from processed foods to whole foods and from conventional foods to organic foods. It requires giving up the personal care and beauty items sold in conventional grocery and discount stores and embracing natural and organic products sold in health food stores and by online health retailers, even if they cost more. It means cutting back on eating out at restaurants that serve highly chemicalized food in favor of eating at home, where you have control over what enters your body.

As your start to feel better and your enthusiasm grows you can throw out the Windex and Comet and learn to clean with vinegar and baking soda. Get rid of those paint cans and other chemicals stored in the basement that leak toxic gases into your environment. Say goodbye to the Orkin man and learn how to control household pests naturally. Get rid of aluminum and chemically coated cookware, and stoop using aluminum foil and drinking from aluminum cans. Open the window before you use your printer so you don’t have to breathe the ink fumes. Learn to read the label of everything you buy. Throw out those plastic dishes you use for food storage and replace them with glass. Stop drinking from plastic bottles and get a water purification system. Quit buying precooked meals in plastic pans to cook in the microwave.

Yes, it sounds like a lot, but you don’t have to do it all at once. Every step will help decrease the toxic load coming into your body.

There are many way to increase the amount of toxins leaving your body. Learn how to take detoxifying baths and exercising are two good ways to start. Learn how to release toxins stored in your joints with yoga and the detoxifying deep breathing that goes with it. Get a juice machine and make green juices from fresh organic vegetables including cilantro. Take chlorella and/or spirulina, two power sources of detoxifying chlorophyll.

Do you know that household air is up to 500 times more polluted than outdoor air, even if you live in a large industrial city? Spending time outdoors is a great way to begin detoxification. Go for a walk or a hike with your family or buy a bicycle. Stop having toxic chemical sprayed on your yard, and start doing the yard work yourself.

When you really get going on detoxification, you can expect a reduction in allergic reactions and food craving, enhanced energy, increased mental clarity and sense of well being, and a return of the ability of your body to burn fat. Those mystery symptoms you've been having will begin to disappear, and you will be able to feel good about your life again.
