Cold Weather Safety Tips for Your Pet

by Nature's Logic

(The Best Years in Life) Winter has begun — are you prepared to keep your pet safe from the cold? Harmful symptoms ranging from hypothermia to dry, irritated skin can put your pet at risk. We’ve gathered some tips and information to help keep your pets safe this winter:

Paw Protection:

Although it’s important to keep walking your pet during the winter months, snow can harm their paws. Keep them moisturized to protect against salt and chemical agents by applying a dollop of petroleum jelly, paw boots, or paw wax.

It’s not a good idea to closely shave your pet during the winter, as longer coats provide more warmth. To help with the winter chill, dress them up with a coat or sweater before letting them outside.

Feed Well:

Outdoor pets require more calories in the winter to generate enough body heat to keep them warm. Make sure that your pet always has plenty of water, and monitor their body condition to keep them in a healthy range. One of the main symptoms of winter is dry, flaky skin. The best way to keep your pet’s skin healthy and moisturized is by feeding them the right diet. Our North Atlantic Sardine Oil is a great supplement to add to your pet’s diet because it contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to play a critical role in skin function and appearance. Made of harvested wild sardines, it contains more EPA and DHA than salmon oil and has naturally lower levels of environmental contaminants. By simply pumping North Atlantic Sardine Oil onto your pet’s food, you add some of nature’s most bio-available sources that hydrate their skin.

Keep Pets Indoors:

If it’s too cold for you to go outside, it’s also too cold for your pet. But how cold is too cold? Dr. Kim Smyth from Petplan Pet Insurance created a chart based on information from the Tufts Animal Condition and Care System. The chart is simple: find the outdoor temperature, look at the size of your dog, and determine if it’s safe for your pet to go outside or not. For more information about this chart, visit Petplan Pet Insurance: https://www.gopetplan.com/blogpost/cold-weather-and-dogs

Ditch the Bath:

Washing too often can deplete essential oils and increase dry, flaky skin. If your pet is in dire need of a bath, ask your vet for a moisturizing shampoo or rinse recommendations.

Make Some Noise:

Feral and outdoor cats often seek warmth underneath the hood of our cars, and the fan belt can injure or kill a cat when the motor starts. To avoid this, simply bang on the hood of your vehicle to allow the cat to escape.

Speak Up:

Animal neglect is a misdemeanor crime in all 50 states. If you see a pet out in the cold without proper food or shelter, please contact law enforcement. Note the date, time, and location of the animals involved and follow up to see if the situation was solved.
