DEA: Public Enemy Number One Keeping You from Healing Herbs

by Ethan Huff

(The Best Years in Life) In an embarrassing show of what one media columnist recently described as "pharmacological phobia," the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), an unelected arm of the federal government, made the arbitrary decision to add yet another harmless, but apparently "scary," plant to its Schedule I list of prohibited "drugs" that supposedly have no medicinal value and a high likelihood of abuse.

Known as kratom, this plant is widely used throughout Southeast Asia--and has been for hundreds, or even thousands, of years--as a pain-reliever and performance-booster, boasting sedative and stimulant properties depending on the amount used. It's typically and traditionally brewed into a tea, though some people chew the leaves directly for therapeutic effect.

Kratom is nothing more than an herbal folk medicine that, for all intents and purposes, is generally safe and effective when used either medicinally or recreationally. So what's the problem? The problem is that kratom, being relatively new here in the U.S., is quickly replacing potentially deadly opiates as a remedy of choice for pain.

Kratom is safe and effective

Unlike prescription opiate drugs such as oxycodone (Oxycontin) and hydrocodone (Vicodin), as well as "street" opiate drugs like heroin, kratom isn't addictive and doesn't create dependency. It also doesn't threaten to kill its users, offering steady and modulated pain relief without any of the deadly side effects associated with heroin and pharmaceutical use.

It's a win-win situation for everyone--everyone except the pharmaceutical industry, anyway. Billions of dollars are at stake when people use kratom rather than whatever expensive prescription drug their doctors prescribe them for pain, hence why the DEA is now aggressively targeting this innocent plant for legal extinction--and this federal agency will do just that if we let it!

The revolving door between government and Big Pharma is responsible for creating this aggressive climate of herbal bullying in Washington, where effective remedies like kratom and cannabis (marijuana) are shelved as "dangerous," and replaced with patented medications that often don't work and that come with serious risks.

Non-psychoactive hemp still can't be grown in the US because of DEA

The relevance of all this can be seen with another plant herb that's also safe, effective, and illegal, at least in the eyes of the DEA: hemp. Believe it or not, neither hemp still can't be legally grown in the U.S. due to the fact that it looks just like marijuana, another prohibited plant under the DEA's Schedule I restriction. Hemp plants are entirely non-psychoactive, of course, but this is irrelevant within the DEA's bizarre scope of enforcement.

Some states are now enacting their own laws to allow for the cultivation of industrial hemp, and nearly half the country currently has some form of medical and/or recreational marijuana laws on the books allowing for the state-level cultivation, use, and sale of psychoactive cannabis. But in the eyes of the DEA, this is all considered to be illegal activity.

The DEA claims that there's simply not enough science to validate either cannabis or kratom as being legitimate herbal "drugs" with medicinal benefit. Aside from the fact that plants aren't "drugs," whatever that word even means, this rationale is based on faulty reasoning that favors the prohibition of all natural substances with therapeutic effects--or at least the ones that compete with patented pharmaceuticals.

Truth be told, herbs and plants--and especially potently-therapeutic ones like cannabis and kratom--are nature's gift to mankind. And trying to "ban" them is like trying to pin Jello to the wall: it doesn't work and, in addition to creating underground black markets, is an exceptional waste of resources. It's also an affront to our personal liberties as supposedly free Americans, who should have the freedom to consume and medicate with whatever we wish.
