FEMA Simulation 'Game' Predicts Global Food Shortages, Price Spikes of 400 Percent
by Ethan Huff
(The Best Years in Life) A major military contractor has joined up with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to release a series of studies based on a computer simulation that predict widespread food shortages within the coming decade, new reports indicate. Federal officials surmise that these inevitable shortages will quickly lead to food prices spiking upwards of 400 percent, which experts believe will result in major social unrest.
Officials from around the world, including at the U.S. State Department and the World Bank, teamed up with the CNA Corporation to develop a simulation "game" based on this scenario, which aims to identify in advance the consequences of both natural and manmade environmental disasters in order to effectively mitigate them. A societal breakdown is believed to be looming on the horizon and may already be in motion, experts believe, and a crippled food production situation may just be the trigger to unleash this Pandora's box.
Based on the outcome of the game, food prices are expected to quadruple between 2020 and 2030 and stay that way for quite a while--this, the consequence of various environmental disasters, resultant rising oil prices, and inevitable currency inflation, among other factors. Climate change is also being lumped in as a potential instigator of agricultural failures, which within our current monocropping paradigm is already showing signs of bringing about devastating crop failures in the coming years.
"Disruptions affected developed and developing countries alike, creating political and economic instability, and contributing to social unrest in certain areas," reads a technical report issued as a summary of the simulation results.
Food supply volatility a factor of oil dependency, chemical agriculture, and greed
One of the reasons why many in the natural health community are already going "off the grid" and starting to grow their own food is because we see the writing on the wall. Our food system is broken, and we're far too reliant upon volatile factors like oil production and chemicals that, should these things run dry, are sure to wreak havoc like nothing we've ever seen before in our lifetimes.
Many American farms today grow nothing but genetically-engineered corn and soybeans, for example, which because they're grown in isolation from other crops are exceptionally vulnerable to pests and disease, not to mention their reliance upon chemical inputs like Roundup (glyphosate) that are only available from greedy corporations. This dependency upon patented chemicals and technologies just to grow food is a major disaster just waiting to happen.
And then there's the transportation factor--all of these yields have to be brought to silos in order to be processed, packaged, and shipped, a system that requires an endless supply of oil to produce fuel for tanker trucks and other vehicles. Local food production has been making a comeback in recent years, but the predominant infrastructure for food production today is still one that's almost completely dependent upon oil and chemicals to function.
Things were different even just 100 years ago, when many Americans grew their own food at home rather than depend on grocery stores, the supplies of which would dry up in a matter of days or even hours in the event of a crisis. This is why so many folks who otherwise might have perished survived the Great Depression--they knew how to grow food and take care of themselves without government intervention. Sadly, the world is much different today.
It's primarily a factor of greed, of course, as large-scale monocropping and the use of genetic engineering serve as convenient ways for corporations to enrich themselves at the expense of environmental and public health--all under the guise of "feeding a hungry world." The viability of these techniques won't last forever, though, as we're already seeing in the case of "superbugs" of "superweeds"--and now the threat of global food shortages--which means we clearly have a major crisis on our hands if things don't change, and quickly!
