Some Thoughts on Friends, Funerals and the Passing of My Friend Martin Stewart

by Tony Isaacs

(The Best Years in Life) I hate funerals, simply hate them, and no matter how much respects you pay the dead it won't help them or bring them back. Funerals are for the living and for remembrances both good and bad - to show our respects and perhaps also to try to assuage our regrets.

I say this because this past week I went to a funeral of a good friend who died suddenly earlier this week when he had a auto wreck on the way home from picking up donuts. You know, I often told Martin (pictured here wearing a cap and sitting by my cousin Les) that sugar was going to kill him but that was not the way I expected. As a matter of fact, I told Martin lots of things that he should do differently so that he might live longer - including my parting words to him this past Saturday morning when I left the beloved pasture to come home to try to save my garden from the weeds and grasses that had overtaken it during yet another spring monsoon season. It is hard for me to know what I do and keep my mouth shut when I see people doing unhealthy things.

Martin was a hard headed guy who didn't want to hear it, and I suppose now that I should have just accepted that. But I didn't. And I bet a dollar to one of those donuts that the bottle of milk thistle I gave him has never been opened.

Martin was also a kind, friendly and generous soul who would do anything for anybody - somebody who I was happy to count as a friend. THAT is what I wish I had told him the last time I saw him and I wish I had told him that more often than I did. And so now when I see another gorgeous East Texas sunset, or a full moon rising over the trees, or enjoy a cookout, play a game of dominoes or toss some horseshoes at the beloved pasture where I go to unwind on weekends, I will likely feel not only the loss of my good friend but also a twinge of guilt. Perhaps there's a lesson for all of us here. Life can be fleeting and can be taken from us at any time. If you have any loved ones or dear friends you have had disagreements with the last time you saw them, perhaps it would be a good idea to tell them about your good feelings for them. You just never know when it might be too late to do so. Rest in peace, my good friend, Martin. We will miss you.

Note: Luella Maywill have some added thoughts about Martin and his sudden passing during the second half hour of our radio show this week. If you miss it, you can catch the re-broadcast any time at your convenience. www.blogtalkradio.com/tbyil
