Gum Disease
Many of you think
the worse thing about gum disease is losing your teeth,
right? If you said "yes", you are wrong! Gum disease can
affect your health in other ways besides. People with
gum disease are three times more likely to have heart
problems? and twice as likely to have a stroke compared
to people that have healthy gums? Gum disease may also
worsen respiratory problems, such as chronic bronchitis.
l Vitamin C - Helps to prevent tooth decay and promotes healthy gums. You should take 1,000 mg a day in a time-release form.l * Calcium - Your teeth are made mostly of calcium, so you need a good supply of this mineral. Take 1,500 mg, preferably as calcium gluconate or calcium citrate. Both of these forms are easily absorbed.l *Magnesium - This mineral works with calcium to build strong teeth. Magnesium also helps to prevent tooth decay and promotes recovery from gum disease. You should take 500 mg daily.Who are the culprits? Foods that contain lots of sugar, fat and/or protein. Your best self defense is to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods. Fruits and vegetables promote an alkaline environment in the mouth. They are also high in fiber, which helps to clean the mouth. Rinsing for good oral hygiene. l Bacteria in you mouth are the cause of gum disease and tooth decay! An herbal mouth rinse containing natural antibiotics is especially effective at preventing these problems.l The herbs goldenseal, myrrh, and calendula have been used for centuries to improve dental health. Purchase each herb separately in tincture form, then combine 30 drops of each in a small brown bottle. Store the tincture in a cool, dark place away from children.l Ideally, you should use a water irrigator for the herbal mouth rinse. It allows you to irrigate the pockets between your teeth and gums, where the bacteria accumulates.l Good choices for an irrigator are WaterPik, or any other brand with an irrigation tip that reaches below the gum line. They usually cost between $40 - $80.l Add 1/4 teaspoon of the herbal mixture to the reservoir of the water jet. Aftre brushing, spray between each tooth for 5 seconds. If you do not have an irrigator then swish the mixture in your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit out.
