Gum Disease
Many people
believe that the worst thing about gum disease is the
possibility of losing their teeth. However, gum
disease can result in far worse problems, such as heart
disease and respiratory illness. People with
gum disease are three times more likely to have heart
problems and twice as likely to have a stroke compared
to people that have healthy gums. Gum disease may also
worsen respiratory problems, such as chronic bronchitis.
* Vitamin C - Helps to prevent tooth decay and promotes healthy gums. Like virtually all vitamins and minerals, the best form is what comes in whole foods, especially citrus fruits, but natural vitamin C is hard to find in supplemental form. * Calcium - Your teeth are made mostly of calcium, so you need a good supply of this mineral. 1500 mg per day would be a good amount. Note: Most people get plenty of calcium from dairy products and fortified foods. Supplemental calcium gluconate or calcium citrate are both easily absorbed. l * Magnesium - This mineral works with calcium to build strong teeth. Magnesium also helps to prevent tooth decay and promotes recovery from gum disease. You should take 500 mg daily. The main culprits for gum disease are foods that contain lots of sugar, fat and/or protein. Your best self defense is to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods. Fruits and vegetables promote an alkaline environment in the mouth. They are also high in fiber, which can help clean the mouth. If you do have gum disease, follow these three suggestions and you will likely soon find your gum disease conquered:
Another thing to
consider is making yourself a herbal mouth wash/rinse.
The herbs goldenseal, myrrh, and calendula have been
used for centuries to improve dental health. Purchase
each herb separately in tincture form, then combine 30
drops of each in a small brown bottle. Store the
tincture in a cool, dark place away from children. ![]()
