Gum Disease

Many people believe that the worst thing about gum disease is the possibility of losing their teeth.  However, gum disease can result in far worse problems, such as heart disease and respiratory illness. People with gum disease are three times more likely to have heart problems and twice as likely to have a stroke compared to people that have healthy gums. Gum disease may also worsen respiratory problems, such as chronic bronchitis.

The best way to help prevent gum disease is to brush twice a day floss at night, and use a water irrigator every evening to stimulate the blood flow to your gums! Also, if you are a person with a lot of fillings, or there is a history of gum disease in your family, you should see your dentist every 3 months for an exam and insist on non-mercury fillings.

In addition to a good, whole foods derived multi-vitamin product, the following are essential for good gum and teeth health:

* Vitamin C - Helps to prevent tooth decay and promotes healthy gums. Like virtually all vitamins and minerals, the best form is what comes in whole foods, especially citrus fruits, but natural vitamin C is hard to find in supplemental form.

* Calcium - Your teeth are made mostly of calcium, so you need a good supply of this mineral. 1500 mg per day would be a good amount.  Note: Most people get plenty of calcium from dairy products and fortified foods.  Supplemental calcium gluconate or calcium citrate are both easily absorbed.

l * Magnesium - This mineral works with calcium to build strong teeth. Magnesium also helps to prevent tooth decay and promotes recovery from gum disease. You should take 500 mg daily.

The main culprits for gum disease are foods that contain lots of sugar, fat and/or protein. Your best self defense is to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods. Fruits and vegetables promote an alkaline environment in the mouth. They are also high in fiber, which can help clean the mouth.

If you do have gum disease, follow these three suggestions and you will likely soon find your gum disease conquered:

1. Get yourself some of the Colloidal Silver Skin and Scalp bars and use them to brush your teeth. Utopia Silver found out about this unanticipated benefit when one of Utopia Silver's customers called in to say that he had been doing so and his gum disease and plaque were gone. Since then, many people, including myself use those bars for our teeth and gums (I also use them for showering of course as well as for shampooing). The bars are pretty inexpensive (especially when you use the CZ discount code of LR001 if they aren't on sale) and, in addition to about 50 PPM colloidal silver, also contain plant derived minerals, aloe vera and essential oils (and no animal products or gelatin),

2. Swish you mouth with colloidal/ionic silver a few times each day.

3. After you have used the colloidal silver, rub some neem oil or tea tree oil on your gums. The all both antiseptic and very effectived against gingivitis and plaque. You can also place a few drops of either oil on your toothbrush along with your tooth cleanser (ideally the aforementioned colloidal silver bar) when you brush your teeth. Oil of oregano is also antiseptic and kills infections, but neem oil and tea tree oil are considered the best for gum disease (and oil of oregano is a bit unpleasant when applied directly to the gums or mouth).

Another thing to consider is making yourself a herbal mouth wash/rinse. The herbs goldenseal, myrrh, and calendula have been used for centuries to improve dental health. Purchase each herb separately in tincture form, then combine 30 drops of each in a small brown bottle. Store the tincture in a cool, dark place away from children.

* Ideally, you should use a water irrigator for the herbal mouth rinse. It allows you to irrigate the pockets between your teeth and gums, where the bacteria accumulates.

* Good choices for an irrigator are Water Pik, or any other brand with an irrigation tip that reaches below the gum line. They usually cost between $40 - $80.

* Add 1/4 teaspoon of the herbal mixture to the reservoir of the water jet. For even better results, you can also add a few drops of the neem or tea tree oil and plenty of colloidal silver. After brushing, spray between each tooth for 5 seconds. If you do not have an irrigator then swish the mixture in your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit out.
