DIY Home Remedies for Shingles - Relieve the Agony, Soothe the Itching

(The Best Years in Life) While the agony of shingles will not kill you, the disease can make you want to die from pain and itching. An infectious disease that often effects the elderly, the shingles virus usually enters the body when you contract chicken pox; however a chicken pox or shingles vaccine can also trigger a shingles outbreak. It causes a contagious rash predominantly on one side of the upper body that lasts for several weeks. Home remedies provide relief from shingles and combine well with homeopathic treatment to eliminate the disease.

Home remedies

Colloidal oatmeal baths sooth the skin, dry up lesions, and relieve itching. Pour a cup of organic rolled oats into the toe of a stocking or a muslin cloth bag. Tie off and hang from the faucet in the bathtub so water runs over it as it fills the tub. Once in the tub, remove the bag and allow it to float in the water.

Apple cider vinegar compresses, whether hot or cold, provide temporary relief from pain and itching. Add 1/4 cup organic apple cider vinegar to 2-3 cups water and soak the compress cloth. Squeeze until just damp and apply to wherever it hurts. Adjust temperature of the water according to individual needs.

Turmeric relieves inflammation and pain in a manner similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; yet, it poses almost no side effects. Take turmeric in capsule or liquid form several times a day. Use caution if you take blood thinning medications. Consult your health care practitioner or an herbal expert for suggested dosage.

Colloidal silver possesses antibiotic, antifungal and antimicrobial properties and protects against opportunist infections that may attack open sores. Take colloidal silver orally daily and use as a topical application to pat on blisters, sores and areas that itch.

Corn starch soothes the skin and keeps it dry, especially in areas where perspiration occurs. Pat organic corn starch that's GMO-free onto the rash for relief from itching.

Baking soda is excellent for stopping the itch. Apply a paste of baking soda and water to the rash for relief. Baking soda mixed 50/50 with cornstarch will also provide relief from itching and keep your skin dry. Pat on gently as a dry powder.


Pascalite clay, a potent form of bentonite clay, Pascalite possesses antibiotic, antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It's very soothing and helps reduce itching and protects against infection. It's drawing power will help dry up fluid-filled vesicles. Mix 50/50 with organic cornstarch for a soothing body powder, or add baking soda to the mix and use as powder. Pascalite can also be made into a paste by adding water and should be kept moist after applying to the rash.

Aloe Vera soothes the skin, relieves itching and protects against infection. If you have an aloe plant, cut a piece of a leaf and apply the gel to the rash. Alternatively, buy organic Aloe vera to treat affected areas.

Calendula heals the skin, removes scars, relieves itching and protects against infection. Non-alcoholic liquid calendula is prepared in a glycerin base and will not sting. Mix a little with purified or filtered water and dab it on lesions. Calendula ointment is also available for topical application.

Slippery elm syrup heals and protects the skin. Used mostly to repair the lining of the digestive tract, the syrup can also be used to coat an area of the shingles rash to relieve burning and itching.

Common sense

Keep hands clean, stop scratching, don't pop blisters or pick at sores, and avoid contact with people who may be at risk, such as those with weekend immune systems. Wash all clothing and bedding in hot water to remove oils to avoid re-infection. Get lots of bed rest to help strengthen your immune system for a speedy recovery.
