(The Best Years in Life) In the first part of this series, we looked at the symptoms of mold sensitivity. In part two, you learned how to spot hidden mold lurking in your home. In this third and final part, I'll show you how to get rid of mold naturally.

It is important to note that when you're cleaning mold from your home, especially if you're highly sensitive to it, that you wear a respirator, goggles, and gloves at all times. If at any point during the mold removal process, you feel dizzy, faint, short of breath, or nauseous, stop what you're doing and call a friend or professional to help.

Step One - Stop the Mold From Spreading or Returning

The first step to getting rid of mold in your home is getting rid of anything that can't be cleaned of mold, and repairing leaks that may cause mold to regrow.

* Chuck it

Any clothing, carpet, or furniture that cannot be salvaged should be removed from your home immediately.

* Fix it

Leaks should be repaired promptly. If you're not handy, ask a friend, family member, or professional to take care of this for you.

* Dehumidify it

If only one room of your home is contaminated with mold, a small dehumidifier should be enough to stop further growth. If the problem is concentrated in the basement or in a larger part of your home, you'll need something with a bit more power.

* Filter it

If you use an air conditioner, use a HEPA filter to remove mold spores in the air, and be sure to change the filter regularly.

* Exhaust it

If you have exhaust fans in your bathroom and kitchen, use them when bathing or cooking. If you don't have them, this may be an investment to look into.

* Check it

Be sure the perimeter of your home is clear by removing dead leaves and vegetation from your gutters and around your foundation.

Step Two - Get Rid of Mold Safely and Naturally

I know this may seem like the reverse order to do things, but I think it's important to tackle the big stuff first. If you start cleaning before you take the steps mentioned above, you could have new patches of mold growing by the time you start cleaning.

Here are five natural products you can use to get rid of mold:

* Baking Soda

Baking soda is a great natural cleanser that has been shown to kill certain types of mildew. If your mold problem is minor, this method should work just fine. In a spray bottle, dissolve ⅛ cup of baking soda into one quart of water. Saturate the affected areas and let it soak in for a couple of hours. Then, scrub the areas clean with a soft sponge. Rinse well and wipe thoroughly when finished.

* White Vinegar

For tougher mold problems, use white vinegar. The pH of vinegar is an acidic 2.5 which helps break up the structure of mold. Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle and saturate the affected areas. Using a little elbow grease, scrub the mold off with a sponge.

* Essential Oils

Many essential oils are naturally anti-fungal, plus they smell better than vinegar.

* Tea Tree Oil

The strong antimicrobial properties of tea tree oil make it a powerful natural mold killer. In a small spray bottle, mix 10 drops of tea tree oil into one cup of water. Spray the affected areas and leave overnight. Then, scrub the area with more of the solution to get rid of the mold.

* Clove Oil

Clove oil is another powerful antifungal agent you can use to get rid of mold naturally. In a spray bottle, mix ¼ of a teaspoon of clove oil into one liter of water. Spray the mixture on the affected areas and leave overnight. The next day, scrub the mold away, rinse the area, and dry it thoroughly.

* Hydrogen Peroxide Mixture

Mix one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide in one cup of water. Pour it onto a wet cloth and wipe it on the mold. Let the mixture remain on the surface for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, using undiluted hydrogen peroxide, wipe the area clean.

* Distilled Grain Alcohol

Cheap grain alcohol is another effective way to naturally get rid of mold. Get the cheapest bottle of vodka you can find and spray or pour it directly onto the mold. Alcohol that has been filtered less and distilled a fewer amount of times will contain more congeners like acetaldehyde, which is 30 times more toxic to fungus than ethyl alcohol. (Just don't drink the stuff!)

Now you know how to get rid of mold in your home without using bleach or other harsh chemicals. If, for any reason, you are still unable to clear the mold completely from your home, call a professional. There are mold removal specialists out there who use only safe and eco-friendly chemicals.
