Independent Scientists Fighting Back Against the GMO Industry Media Monolith

(The Best Years in Life) Until recently, prestigious highly respected scientists who discovered GMO dangers were dismissed summarily and their documents destroyed. A prime example is former Scotland Rowett Research Institute lead scientific researcher and world's leading lectins and plant genetic modification expert, Dr. Arpad Pusztai.

Maybe Dr. Pusztai wasn't aware of the strings attached to the large grant given his laboratory to study GMO potatoes in 1995. But he was not even thinking there would be issues with those potatoes. He was assured there were no significant differences with the genetically altered potatoes than similar non GMO breeds and thought his research wouldn't have any surprises.

But he did come to realize there were nutritional differences early on. Then upon feeding lab rats the potatoes, he discovered stunted growth and immunity issues. His findings were attacked, and after 30 years of research service with a prestigious laboratory, he was quickly dismissed, his lab shut down, documents destroyed, and he was forbidden to discuss his case publicly.

The powers that be used the media, including various journals influenced by the biotech (GMO) industry, to smear and disgrace Arpad Pusztai. They essentially killed this messenger. Also in 1998, when he had come out with his findings, a Russian study did a similar feed test using Monsanto's GM potatoes. They came up with the same conclusions as Dr. Pusztai: GM potatoes were unfit for human consumption.

But this time the Russian scientists were spared the sudden tragic fate of Pusztai and his lab. Dr. Pusztai made the mistake of showing his hand publicly via UK mainstream media. He had to be silenced dramatically. The situation in Russia was very different. Only Monsanto knew of the tepidly negative Russian study. So all they had to do was alter the report to make it positive then submit it to Russian food regulators for the green light.

Ironically, the 1990s GM potato failed to live up to expectations and Monsanto dropped that hot potato, although it appears there's another on the way. Nevertheless Dr. Pusztai's case and the original Russian study's suppression for nine years from Monsanto's subterfuge serve as examples of how Monsanto does what it wants and gets away with it all too often.

A Scientist More Recently Attacked for Finding GMO Faults Strikes Back Successfully

Almost everyone who is aware of GMO dangers or reads the internet independent news knows something about Giles-Eric Seralini and his research team at the University of Caen in France. They're the ones who did a toxicity study with rats fed GMO corn from Monsanto and displayed rats who had developed tumors over a two year feeding period.

The attacks on Seralini et al focused on the tumors, which had a high visual media impact. But they weren't testing for cancerous effects primarily. Their toxicity analysis focused on long term effects on liver and kidney health, where they did find indisputable evidence of gross harm.

Professor Seralini’s study was a chronic toxicity study, not a full-scale carcinogenicity study. Therefore he conservatively did not do a statistical analysis of the tumors and mortality findings. Instead he simply reported them, without drawing definitive conclusions, complying with OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) guidelines for chronic toxicity protocol reportage, which requires that any “lesions” (including tumors) observed are recorded.

You can sift through more of Monsanto's dirty dealings that temporarily buried Seralini and his team's research by retracting his study from the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology (FCT) long enough to give the whole GMO-Roundup toxicity efforts a public black by reviewing this earlier TBYIL article here.

The same study that was retracted due to unfair influence from a “former” Monsanto scientist's sudden appearance as an FCT editor was republished months later in a journal far removed from Monsanto's influence, Environmental Sciences Europe. Of course, there was little to no mention of that in the mainstream media.

Unlike Dr. Arpad Pusztai with his lonely and vulnerable circumstances, Seralini's team fought back with CRIIGEN, acronym for Comité de Recherche et d'Information Indépendantes sur le Génie Génétique, (translation - Committee for Independent Research and Information on Genetic Engineering).

They filed for public defamation against Marianne Magazine and it's feature journalist Jean-Claude Jaillet for publicly claiming in 2012 that Seralini and his team were guilty of "scientific fraud in which the methodolgoy served to reinforce pre-determined results".

That same article also reported "researchers around the world" had voiced "harsh words" about Seralini's long term (two years) toxicity research on rats fed GMO Roundup-tolerant corn. Seralini and CRIIGEN with the assistance of notaries Bernard Dartevelle and Cindy Gay won their suit against Marianne Magazine.

Then after a three year investigation ending on the 25th of November 2105, the High Court of Paris indicted Marc Fellous, one of those charged in the original libel case earlier. He just happened to be the chairmen of France's Biomolecular Engineering Commission who had rubber stamped many genetically modified products for consumption.
Apparently Fellous has been charged with forgery and the use of forgery, using a scientist's signature without permission to "prove" Seralini and company were wrong about their study that concluded Monsanto's Roundup Ready corn was not safe for consumption until further study was undertaken. Final judgement and sentencing is expected by early 2016.
The court's investigation discovered that American journalist Henry Miller via notoriously pro-GMO Forbes Magazine had initiated the libelous attacks. Henry is one of those merceneary rabid attack hacks who has a history of journalistic lobbying for industries that are dangerous to the health and welfare of humanity, including the tobacco industry. Slimey work, but it pays well.

Here's a final positive yet unreported upshot of the Seralini affair forced by international scientists complaints of how a “former” Monsanto scientist came onto FCT's editorial staff:

Critical changes have recently (2015) been made at the journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, from which the Editor-in-Chief A. Wallace Hayes retracted the important paper by the Seralini team. The Editorial Board of the journal now has a new Editor-in-Chief, José L. Domingo, who has published papers showing that safety of GM crops is not an established fact; and the Editorial Board no longer includes Richard Goodman, the ex-Monsanto employee who became Associate Editor for Biotechnology not long before the Seralini paper was retracted. (Emphasis added by author)

Once in a while the good scientists win in this crazy world. Too bad the mainstream media's financial ties with the biotech industry make it complicit to the bad guys enough to not report the good news.
