Is Your Dietary Supplement Slowly Killing You?

(The Best Years in Life) You eat right, exercise, and take dietary supplements. So, you should be in the best shape of your life, right? Not necessarily. In fact, your favorite supplement could be slowly killing you!
Many conventional vitamins contain dangerous chemicals that have been linked to immune dysfunction, neurological disturbances, infertility, and even cancer.
Dangerous Chemicals in Your Dietary Supplements
Let's take a look at some of the potential dangers that may be hidden in the supplements you take every day.
This dangerous chemical has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
When sodium benzoate combines with vitamin C (either in the supplement itself or from a food source), it forms benzene, a cancer-causing chemical that has been linked to leukemia and other blood cancers.
Other names you may see this additive under include, benzoic acid, benzene, benzoate, and E211.
This additive is used as a “flow agent” to prevent supplement ingredients from sticking to mechanical equipment and slowing down production.
Magnesium stearate has been shown to have a negative impact on your body's ability to absorb nutrients (making the use of a supplement containing it rather pointless).
Silicon dioxide has been shown to dramatically lower blood sugar, making it especially dangerous for those with hypoglycemia or diabetes. It has also been shown to interact poorly with certain prescription medications. One of these being diuretics (“water pills”).
Combining silica and diuretics can lead to dehydration and dangerously low potassium levels.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified titanium dioxide as a potential carcinogen. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been linked to genetic disorders, neurological abnormalities, and possibly cancer.
Artificial colors like Red 40 and Yellow 5 have been shown to cause serious side effects like hyperactivity, insomnia, autoimmune and/or allergic response, and tumor growth.
Something Else to Consider When Taking Supplements
When you use conventional, store-bought dietary supplements, you’re not only ingesting a cocktail of chemicals, you’re also feeding your body synthetic nutrients.
These nutrients have been created in a laboratory. Your immune system won't recognize them, which could lead to chronic inflammation and allergic response.
Also, your body cannot effectively absorb them, which means they provide no nutritional value.
Anything your body doesn’t recognize as safe will be rejected by your immune system.
If you continue to take dietary supplements containing these additives, your body will be on constant alert, which could lead to more serious health problems down the road.
Choose Whole-Food Dietary Supplements
For optimum health, you need good nutrition. This means eating a healthy diet filled with whole food and dietary supplements your body can actually use. Whole-food supplements are derived from plant sources, which means they are bioavailable and more easily absorbed. They are also much less likely to contain harmful additives.
When you're on a budget, the cost of whole-food dietary supplements may seem prohibitory, but think of it this way: If you're taking off-brand supplements now, they're either doing nothing to improve your health or (more than likely), they're making it worse.
Taking whole-food supplements is a smart way to invest in your health. They may cost a bit more now, but they could save you a ton of money on doctor visits and prescription drugs later on.
Remember what Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
