New Cancer Study Pushes Chemo and Radiation While Warning Against Alternatives Such as Colloidal Silver, Vitamin B17 and Beta Carotene

(The Best Years in Life) Yet another flawed mainstream medicine study is being used to warn against "toxic" alternative cancer treatments such as colloidal silver, vitamin B17 (laetrile) and beta carotene while pushing the tried and failed mainstream treatments of chemo and radiation.
In the study "Complementary Medicine, Refusal of Conventional Cancer Therapy, and Survival Among Patients with Curable Cancers"* published last month in JAMA Oncology, the study authors report that cancer patients who opted for alternative measures to treat their cancer had a poorer 5 year survival rate than those who opted for the mainstream treatments (82.2% versus 86.6%).
The study is being widely reported in the mainstream media to not only warn against refusing chemo and radiation but also warn against using effective alternative therapies. The report by Reuters** has this quote from Dr. Moshe Frenkel, the founder of the Integrative Oncology Clinic at MD Anderson Cancer Center who was not involved in the study:
“The group of patients that elect to stop all conventional treatments and utilize non-medical practitioners, tend to use extreme practices that at times are toxic, such as vitamin B17, high doses of beta carotene supplements and colloidal silver to name a few,” Frenkel, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. These practices may make cancer worse, he said.
“You cannot compare these practices to acupuncture, meditation, yoga, massage therapy and others for which we already have accumulated scientific data that support the use in enhancing patients’ quality of life,” Frenkel added.
There you have it - the standard mainstream medicine line: Colloidal silver and other proven alternatives are toxic and the only proven alternative treatments are ones such as acupuncture, meditation and yoga which should be used as "complimentary" treatments along with chemo and radiation. Nothing wrong with those treatments, mind you, and they could be helpful in fighting cancer, but they are hardly among the most powerful alternative cancer treatments - not by a long shot.
The Problems with the Study
Before anyone takes the study and news reports as gospel, I suggest they check out this little gem at the very bottom of the study, right before the "Conclusions":
"However, there was no significant association between CM (complimentary medicine) and survival once treatment delay or refusal was included in the model "
In other words, there really wasn't an advantage to chemo and radiation over alternative treatments when the treatments began near the same time.
Also keep in mind that the study is talking about five-year survival. Five years just happens to be the mainstream gold standard that is used to declare a successful "cure" - and never mind that a "cured" patient might be riddled with cancer and die the week after the 5-year anniversary of their diagnosis. What's missing is the 800 pound gorilla in the room: What about survival rates beyond five years?
Other studies have shown that cancer patients who refuse chemo have much higher long-term survival rates beyond five years than those who choose chemo. That is because chemo and radiation may be able to keep patients alive for five years, but treating cancer as a chronic condition and extending survival time is pretty much all they do. They don't cure cance -instead, they make cancer ever more resistant to treatment and pave the way for the return of cancer.
As numerous studies have demonstrated, chemo and radiation not only leave behind the most resistant cancer cells to multiply and become ever more difficult to eradicate, they create deadly cancer stem cells that are 30 times more difficult to treat than regular cancer cells. Cancer stem cells are the ones that feed the growth of cancer and the ones that cause cancer to return even when it seems to have been eliminated.
By comparison the best alternative treatments like colloidal silver and oleander, destroy the most difficult cancer cells and the best alternative treatments also address and eliminate the core causes of cancer that enable it to gain a foothold to begin with and that lead to the return of cancer. Unlike chemo and radiation.
I will also add that I find the title of the study itself to be a problem, since it refers to “patients with curable cancers”. What about all the cancers that mainstream medicine deems “incurable”? How might alternative treatments compare against mainstream medicine on those cancers, given that by definition they are saying that there are no cures for cancers they determine to be incurable?
This author and many, many others do not believe that there are any cancers which cannot be cured – just not cured by mainstream medicine.
