The U.S. Government's Hypocrisy with Medical Marijuana
by Paul Fassa
This coup topped off bizarre false propaganda of marijuana's dangers, generated by industrial vested interests involving government insiders to keep the hemp plant's amazingly wide array of products from competing with their interests. It had nothing to do with protecting the youth of America from drug abuse.
Thus, marijuana, a Mexican slang term for hemp or cannabis, lulled the AMA counsel based in Washington, DC into complacency until passage of the Marijuana Tax Act had occurred in 1937. AMA counsel Dr. William Woodward had no idea that what legislators were referring to as marijuana was cannabis, and he complained that the bill was passed in secrecy without his input.
Examples of Medical Marijuana Hypocrisy
Now we are fortunately seeing a state by state and even Washington DC easing of marijuana restrictions, especially for medical use. This is largely due to the wave of marijuana's medical merits proven by international researchers and anecdotal miraculous cures without adverse side effects for cancer and other chronic ailments.
Still, the U.S. Justice Department's Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has cannabis in the worst of all possible ratings – Schedule I. This means cannabis is equivalent to cocaine or heroin: Dangerous, addictive, and without medical merit.
The federal government has sponsored negative propaganda about marijuana while allowing booze to be the national drug of choice. A large part of our prison population involves non-violent recreational and medical users, despite new findings with independent research that demonstrated cannabis was a powerful medical tool for even cancer.
Here's the irony of all ironies. In 1974, the DEA decided on a study to prove marijuana kills brain cells as more “proof” for their anti-pot propaganda. The NIH (National Institutes of Health) funded the Virginia Medical College to study the effects on brain cells with an animal study. As the study progressed, what was leaked was not what the DEA wanted.
The researchers were discovering that the cells being destroyed from marijuana were brain cancer cells. So the DEA insisted that the NIH cancel funding. Even worse, they had the research documents destroyed. Soon after, President Gerald Ford declared that only pharmaceutical companies could research cannabis.
Of course, Big Pharma researches natural items for only one reason: To find out how to create synthetic versions, patent them, and market them with FDA approval for big profits whether they are actually effective and safe or not. So far, Marinol was approved in 1985 to help people accept chemotherapy without as much pain or discomfort. It was also approved in 1992 for AIDS patients. Apparently, synthetic Marinol has resulted in four deaths, while raw cannabis's death toll remains at zero.
A Medical Marijuana Activist Presents His Real Life Case
Meet Irvin Rosenfeld, a South Florida financial consultant/stock broker who openly smokes 10 or so joints daily without legal harassment in a state that still hasn't approved marijuana for medical use. He does this for a painful rare bone disease, hereditary multiple extososes (HME) and his unusual thyroid condition, both incurable by mainstream medicine.
Irvin is a successful stock broker/financial consultant of 36 years, married with kids and living in the Ft. Lauderdale area of Florida. He also teaches sailing on weekends as a charitable organization volunteer. Does this strike you as someone who claims to have smoked over 115,000 officially documented joints during his lifetime while promoting medical marijuana as an activist?
After discovering the benefits of smoking pot for his untreatable painful disease during college in 1971, he sought a way to avoid criminal prosecution while pursuing his career as financial consultant. So he petitioned the government and eventually qualified for a “compassionate protocol” that supplied glaucoma and cancer patients with cannabis from the FDA's Investigational New Drug Program.
Irvin began receiving marijuana cigarettes grown and processed from federal government sources in 1982. He was the second patient to be admitted under those However, in 1992, the program was disbanded. That was his source of medical marijuana that he wanted to keep in order to not be a criminal.
It's rare that someone is able to stand up to the Feds without having his family and home surrounded by paramilitary police. But Irvin has managed to maintain his legal status for medical marijuana in the non-medical marijuana state of Florida. He is among the remaining four original compassionate protocol recipients who still receive nicely packed marijuana cigarettes after 28 years.
Irvin has also testified before state government officials considering legalizing medical marijuana. He reveals how he managed to maintain his legal status and supply after the program was disbanded in his book, My Medicine which he sells from his site linked in the sources below.
Irvin asserts, "No one else in the world can document having smoked 115,000 cannabis cigarettes – let alone the ones I smoked before that. I'm living proof that medical cannabis is real medicine. We need to get medicine in the hands of patients who really need it."
His long tenure as a family man, successful financial consultant/stock broker, and charitable organization volunteer without brain damage defies the “stoner” image so many still hold for those who use marijuana.
