Who Will Have the Guts to Take on the Sacred Cow of Military Spending?

a TBYIL editorial essay by Tony Isaacs

(The Best Years in Life) Political debate about cutting spending almost always focuses on cutting entitlement programs, healthcare and safety nets. There is also usually a lot of publicity over the tiny fraction of the budget saved by cutting programs deemed non-essential, though in many instances such programs enrich our lives and culture. What virtually no one appears to have the courage and honesty to take on is the biggest budget bloat of all: military spending.

Take a good look at these two charts:

(Source: http://www.rickety.us/2011/01/2009-defense-spending-by-country/)

As the charts show, we spend almost as much (43%) as the rest of the world combined – over 6 times as much as China and almost 11 times as much as Russia. Does it really take that much money and maintaining over 900 military bases in over 130 foreign countries to have a strong defense? Obviously, our so-called “defense” expenses also include a lot of spending on offense (and control).

Who appointed us the world's policemen? It certainly wasn’t God. More like the global elite who think themselves gods - such as the military industrial complex Eisenhower warned us about, the international corporations, and the bankers and Wall Street crooks we spent trillions bailing out.

Such huge military expenditures are not about keeping us and our country safe as much as they are about keeping the rest of the world safe for the global exploiters who would pillage the rest of the world’s resources and wealth and pollute and make the rest of the world unhealthy to an even greater extent than they have here at home.

While it is true that a strong offense can help make a strong defense, the gap illustrated in the charts is akin to a professional football team versus a pee wee team.

We spend over $2100 per year for every man, woman and child and over $8500 a year for a family of four. Add that to the thousands we have piled on by bailing out the international rich and trying to spend our way out of a problem largely caused by excessive spending and it is easy to see why our economy has been crippled and our standard of living and prosperity has declined.

Half our present budget would still more than double that of the combined total of countries which might be perceived as “enemies". The gap widens further when we add in the spending of our allies.  Are our military forces and equipment so inefficient and inferior that we have to spend many times the amounts of our combined "enemies" just to have a credible defense?  Another country or entity would have to be completely insane and harbor a death-wish to dare attack the United States - and if such insanity were to exist, no amount of spending would be able to stop it.

If we closed bases which were created more for offense than defense and slashed our military budget in half, we could still have a very, very strong national defense. At the same time, In combination with reductions in other government bloat and unaffordable programs and a return of the federal government to a much more limited and constitutionally sound role as intended by our founders, we could:

*Provide a stronger defense for our actual shores and borders and our actual country and citizens

*Slash income tax rates and begin transitioning to a fair revenue system which did not depend on the illegal income tax

*Begin paying down the national debt and take away control of our finances and our country from the international bankers and global elite.

*Rebuild our crumbling infrastructure which is vital to our continued true strength and future prosperity

*Provide a reasonable safety net for those who are unable (as opposed to unwilling) to provide for themselves

*Maintain many non-essential programs which enrich our lives,

and

*Still live within our means with a balanced federal budget.

Imagine how much better our standard of living would be with slashed taxes and no increasing debt burden on our backs and the backs of our children.

The fact that very few politicians are willing to take on the sacred cow of military spending demonstrates just how much we have been conditioned and how we and or politicians are controlled by the enemies who really threaten our freedom, peace and prosperity.
