Natural
Remedies Offer Safer and Better
Options for Coughs
by Tony Isaacs
Every year millions of us will
come down with troublesome coughs.
Sometimes those coughs can linger on
and on and often the irritation and
tickling of coughs may keep us up at
night. The next time you have a
cough, instead of reaching for
potentially dangerous over the
counter cough medicines, try some of
the following safe and effective
natural and home remedies.
*For deep coughs, nebulize with
superior colloidal or ionic silver
and lobelia (five parts colloidal
silver to one part lobelia) as well
as take colloidal silver internally.
You can make the nebulizer
combination even more effective by
adding one part mullein extract.
*Mullein is a very useful herb for
coughing. It can be taken internally
as well as nebulized in extract
form, and, if you can find dried
mullein leaves you can roll them
into a medicinal "joint" and smoke
them.
*Use neti pots. Many people have
found relief from coughs by using
saline solution in neti pots.
*Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) may
be best known as a candy, but as a
tea it can lick a lingering cough.
Steep a licorice root tea bag or one
teaspoon of the loose dried root in
one cup boiling hot water for five
minutes, and drink up to three mugs
of it throughout the day. Your cough
should improve right away, but you
can continue to drink three cups a
day for up to three days. Licorice
can raise your blood pressure, so
don't drink it if you have
hypertension or diabetes.
*Make your own wild cherry cough
syrup and decongestant. Cover the
bottom of a crock pot with wild
cherry bark and add enough honey to
cover the bark. Set the crock pot at
the lowest setting, then cover and
let the mixture cook for two days,
stirring every occasionally. After
two days, strain the mixture and use
the syrup as a cough syrup and/or
decongestant.
*Boil Thyme leaves and make thyme
Tea. This will help stop the cough
from tickling you and from waking
you up.
*Try this almond paste remedy: Soak
almonds overnight. Remove their
skin. Make a paste of the almonds
with a bit of butter and sugar
(organic unrefined sugar is best).
This remedy can be especially useful
for a dry cough.
*Make a hot tea with lemon and
raspberry jam and then drink
plentiful amounts of it throughout
the day.
*Drink hot milk with honey at
bedtime for nighttime cough relief.
*Herbal cough syrup made from yarrow
extract can be very effective and
can often be found at health and
supplement outlets.
*An odd sounding home cough remedy
is this one: Sprinkle sugar (organic
unrefined is best) on one tablespoon
of butter and eat it. Sounds odd,
but many report it usually does the
trick.
*Though perhaps not completely
"natural", the combination of Wild
Turkey (or another similar spirit),
lemon and honey often works well for
eliminating and relieving coughs.
Mix four ounces of honey (especially
locally produced raw clover honey),
four tablespoons of lemon juice and
a shot glass of Wild Turkey. Take a
tablespoon at a time as needed. As
one person who was told of this
remedy observed, "either my cough
will get better or I will cease to
care about it!" (His cough got
better)
