An Epidemic of Pharmaceutical Drug Use is Harming Millions of Kids - Part 2
by Paul Fassa
This enabled psychiatrists, who are certified MDs to prescribe ever expanding psychotropic drugs while excluding psychologists from prescribing any at all and forcing them into counseling only.
The newer DSMs also gave private and government insurance companies guidelines of which FDA drugs to finance. Insurance became financial accomplices for the burgeoning psychiatric-pharmaceutical racket. You don't have to be well off anymore for psychiatry. Just make sure you have coverage for those psychiatric meds.
Psychiatrists have exchanged their notepads used for counseling for prescription pads to accommodate 15 minute shrink visits for new prescriptions occasionally instead of an hour or more weekly.
After all, these new psychotropic drugs, which are permitted to advertise on TV, radios, and print media were FDA approved and medically sound solutions to "chemical imbalances" that create mental disease. Only problem is there is not one valid biochemical test to confirm any of these theoretical imbalances.
All DSM manuals are arranged by a small number of APA psychiatrists who convene every now and then to decide what behavioral disorders should by listed. In other words, mental disease created by committee. And somehow there manages to be pharmaceutical solutions for all of them.
Psychiatrists with pharmaceutical ties comprised at least 68% of the DSM-V committee. Big Pharma pays psychiatrists to deliver seminars, act as consultants, or enroll their clients into final testing of new drugs. A recent movie "Side Effects" plays off that practice nicely. Some receive up to $100,000. Big Pharma paid out $250 million for these and other professional services during the years 2009 and 2010.
Dr. Irwin Savodnik, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA School of Medicine, stated succinctly, "The very vocabulary of psychiatry is now defined at all levels by the pharmaceutical industry."
So What About Those ADD and ADHD Kids?
Since that DSM conference in 1968, Dr. Eisenberg's contribution to mental disease invention by committee consensus has resulted in drugging millions of children from preschool age through high school. It's currently estimated that 20% (one out of five) of children from nursery school and kindergarten through high school and in foster homes have been prescribed Ritalin.
The widespread drugging of children with neurological damage potential puts normal kids in harm's way while creating psychological ignorance and dependence on a pseudo-scientific medical racket that's raking in billions.
The side effects include dependency with increased dosage, nervousness, stunted growth, and less appetite. Some kids reported they felt they were someone else while on Ritalin. Depression often occurs after a run on Ritalin. There have been negative neurological reactions as well as physiological adverse reactions.
Those of us, myself included, who have experienced devil's brew know the ravaging after effects of amphetamine type substances better than clinicians and researchers.
A NY Times article featured a study that showed their were no long term attention or behavioral solutions with kids prescribed Ritalin. Only better schooling (home schooling?), better family support and communication, less TV, and better diets sans sugar, artificial sweeteners, and processed foods will get to the basics of attention and hyperactivity issues.
By the way, there is also a natural, albeit pricey, psychotropic solution from France. Not just for ADD or ADHD, but other neurological issues with adults as well. It's called Flavay and Flavay Plus, and unlike cannabis, it's legal everywhere.
