Common Symptoms and Signs of Adrenal Fatigue - Is This You?

(The Best Years in Life) Adrenal fatigue is characterized by a constellation of symptoms that may occur when an individual's adrenal glands are not functioning to their fullest potential. Do you know the symptoms? The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys and produce over 50 hormones necessary to life. Adrenal fatigue syndrome is not recognized by mainstream doctors; however, alternative healthcare practitioners acknowledge the effects of adrenal fatigue and recognize this syndrome as a precursor to early adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal fatigue is very common and can mimic other health conditions, such as hypothyroidism or chronic fatigue syndrome. Consult with your natural health practitioner before self-treating.

The most common effect of overworked adrenals relates to how a person deals with stress. And increase of stress depletes the adrenal hormones, leaving a individual less able to cope effectively day-to-day. Small decreases in adrenal hormones are difficult to detect in conventional blood tests. The wide array of symptoms displayed by a patient with adrenal fatigue can be diagnosed by a holistic healthcare practitioner familiar with this syndrome.

Adrenal fatigue produces bouts of exhaustion often experienced early in the morning, as well as throughout the day. It's common for people to reach for stimulants like coffee or caffeinated drinks for an energy boost, not realizing how these substances further stress their adrenal glands, worsening their condition. Repeated bouts of weakness may occur throughout the day leaving the individual feeling generally unwell.

Low energy, listlessness and sleepiness are early signs of this syndrome. Feeling unusually tired in the afternoon is common. Taking a short nap becomes a common occurrence for some people, who then find themselves waking fully later in the afternoon, only to experience exhaustion around 10:00 p.m. Instead of going to sleep at that time, they resist rest and may find themselves gaining a second wind at about 11:00 p.m. keeping them awake for hours.

Depression and sighing

Depression and moodiness are often seen along with other symptoms of adrenal fatigue syndrome. Dealing with stress may reduce an individual's ability to effectively function bringing about depression, sadness, mood changes, irritability, anxiety, fearfulness and frequent sighing. Any of these feelings may be accompanied by a decreased sex drive with feelings of despair.

Food Sensitivities or Cravings

Foods high in carbohydrates may be especially difficult to tolerate such as those made from processed white flour. There may be a craving for foods high in fat and salt due to an imbalance in the body’s electrolytes and carbohydrates. Weakness accompanied by lightheadedness when first standing from lying down or being seated may occur. Sensitivities to chemicals and food additives may be exacerbated causing a variety of neurological and cardiovascular symptoms as well as difficulties breathing.

Irregular Pupil Dilation

The pupils in the eyes may not function properly when exposed to light, causing dilation rather than making them contract, indicating adrenal gland problems.

Back pain and weakness

Adrenal fatigue may produce back pain in the region just above the kidneys during palpation. Additionally, there may be general muscular aching and weakness throughout the body.

You can do a preliminary home screening if you believe you're suffering from adrenal fatigue. Read my article for more information.:
