The Myth of Curing Cancer Solely With an Alkaline pH

by Tony Isaacs

(The Best Years in Life) I have seen many internet posts, reports and articles which say that cancer can be cured, perhaps in a little as 4 days, if a person simply reaches and maintains a body pH of 8.0. This "cure" apparently originated from Parhatsathid Nabadalunga, better known as "Ted from Bangkok", who has been a major contributor at the Earth Clinic folk medicine site.  Though "Ted" has certainly contributed some good information and advice at the Earth Clinic, I find a "four day alkaline cure" more than a little bit dubious.  It is a "cure" which has been spread widely and, in my opinion, one which has been much misused since it was first posted.  In addition to a great many internet forums and advice sites, it has also been used on many internet sites which are selling or promoting alkalizing products, books or test kits which measure the pH of either urine or saliva.

Questioning the "four day alkaline cancer cure"

The fact is that there has never been a single study which has shown that an alkaline pH alone - no matter what the pH level may be - can cure cancer. Despite a few anecdotal reports, neither this author nor anyone in my extensive list of people who write about cancer, research cancer and/or help people beat cancer have ever seen a serious case of cancer completely cured in just 4 days from an alkaline pH or any other method.  Cancer does not arrive in an advanced state overnight and is it usually "cured" overnight - especially not if one considers a cure to be getting rid of all of the cancer throughout the body, eliminating the underlying root causes and keeping cancer at bay in the future.

The "four day alkaline cancer cure" recommends testing the pH of urine and that of saliva and averaging the two - and then endeavoring to keep the average at 8.0 or above for four days - something that "Ted" concedes takes "quite an effort". Perhaps it can be done and even done safely, but it is questionable whether or not one could use an average of urine and saliva pH's to accurately tell their body pH.  The fact is that neither urine pH nor saliva pH are foolproof indicators of what a person's actual body pH may be and an average of the two may or may not give an accurate indication of body pH since the pH of both urine and saliva can vary widely from one hour to the next due to a number of circumstances.

The most important pH measurement to use for overall body pH is the pH of the blood. That is what most people refer to when talking about  body pH.  Even that measurement does not tell what the pH is throughout the body since different parts or systems of the body have a wide pH range - some of which are almost impossible to adjust to 8.0 - at least not do so in a healthy manner. For example, the stomach has a normal pH range of 1.35-3.5. It is pretty much impossible to raise that and other low pH parts of the body to a pH of 8.0 without the body being in an acute state of alkalinosis.

The normal pH of blood is slightly alkaline, with a relatively narrow pH range of 7.35 to 7.45 - and the body constantly endeavors to maintain that level. No matter how alkaline your diet is and no matter what else you take to alkalize, the body will constantly struggle to return your blood pH within that narrow range.  One mechanism it uses to keep the blood within normal healthy levels is the urinary tract. As we regulate our body pH, the urinary tract system gets rid of the extra acid or alkaline - which can bounce our urine pH all over the place. Urine pH can also vary widely throughout the day depending on what we eat, if we are under stress, if we exercise, and even as our hormones cycle.

Similarly, the pH of saliva can vary widely depending on many factors other than just how alkaline the rest of our body may be. The normal range for saliva is 6.2 to 7.4, with higher pH levels often seen during increased secretion of saliva - for example, when smelling food cooking or when viewing pictures of food, especially when hungry.

Another claim made in the "alkaline cancer cure" is that cancer will not grow if the body's pH is maintained between 7.0 and 7.5.  Again, this is a very dubious claim which has not been backed up by studies or actual observation.  Though an acidic body is more prone to getting cancer, cancer can also gain a foothold and grow in people whose pH is within the normal 7.35 and 7.45 range. As cancer develops it does turn the body pH more acidic thanks to the lactic acid produced by glucose fermentation in the cancer cells, generally dropping initially to around 7.0 and then falling to 6.5 and even to 6.0 and below as the cancer reaches advanced stages. Thus, while it is important to try to increase pH when one has cancer, that does not mean that it cannot grow when the pH is above 7.0.

An alkaline diet and alkalizing CAN be valuable tools to help beat cancer

Note that I am not saying that cancer cannot be cured with a healthy alkaline diet or that alkalizing is not a useful tool against cancer.  Studies have shown that people who eat alkaline diets consisting mostly of vegetables have a lower incidence of cancer, whereas people who have a more acidic diet including processed meats have a higher incidence.  Cancer cells themselves are generally acidic and cancer tends to turn a body more acidic as it progresses, running the risk of potentially fatal acidosis.  Thus it is important for people who are fighting cancer to eat a more alkaline diet and taking other alkalizing measures could also be helpful.

Though I do not recommend beating cancer by diet alone, cancer has indisputably been beaten with healthy diet programs a great many times - and I do highly recommend a healthy alkaline diet. The question is whether it is the cancer-fighting and immune-boosting nutrients and other compounds found in a healthy alkaline diet which beat the cancer or simply an alkaline pH. As cancer is being cured, there are fewer and fewer cancer cells producing less and less lactic acid and thus the act of curing the cancer results in higher more alkaline pH levels.  Thus one could more accurately say that curing cancer is a cure for acidic pH rather than saying alkaline pH levels alone are a cure for cancer.

The bottom line is that I while I believe that an alkaline diet and alkalizing can be valuable in combating cancer, I would never recommend them as a single-item cures for cancer but rather as tools to use as part of a comprehensive anti-cancer protocol.
