Why Time Spent Outdoors in Nature is Essential for Optimum Health

(The Best Years in Life) There are several reasons why everyone needs to spend some time outdoors in nature, some obvious, like fresh air with more oxygen from grass and trees converting CO2 into oxygen. Others, such as grounding (or earthing) and contact with beneficial soil bacteria are more subtle but have big health benefits and are uplifting and elevating, which contribute to the mind-body health connection.
Not everyone living in cities or suburbs is able to go hiking through forests or up mountain sides or walk along a beach breathing in fresh salt air. One doesn't need to be an adventure seeker rock climbing or riding the rapids or hang gliding either. But engaging in intense aerobic or adventurous activity may pull your senses away from what nature's calmness can provide.
Simple Healthy Outdoor Solutions for the Less Adventurous
Finding a relatively pristine park may do the trick for biking on paths or simply walking. When I lived in New York, Central Park was a natural haven for Manhattans. It was commonly known as a refuge that offered relieve from city life even though still in the city. It is large enough to do that. Almost all cities isolated from forests and farmlands have some sort of park that offers a slice of nature in the city.
Even hanging out leisurely in a park can improve your psychological setting and elevate your mood and health, especially if your walk around barefoot some. If your back or front yard is sufficiently large and barefoot friendly, hang out there and walk around barefoot. Here's why.
The earth has it's own electrical energy designed to energetically recharge those who walk upon it. Walking or even standing around barefoot on a natural surface, grass or sand or mud, for a few minutes has its own health benefits and nomenclature, called grounding or earthing.
Walking barefoot allows the body to absorb the earth's negatively charged electrons. Modern living with all its electronic gadgetry and wi-fi and cell phone towers etc, etc surrounds us with penetrating positive electrons and ions.
Our cells contain positive and negative electrons that need to be balanced. That's the way nature was created. Swimming in natural waters that aren't polluted is also an earthing method that balances positive and negative charges within our body's cells.
The soles of our shoes inhibit or completely prevent grounding or earthing electrical connections to occur, which includes these benefits:
Standing or swimming in water helps relax anxiety and irritability with it's calming coolness. Feeling lazy leading to depression? Open air and bright sunshine would be your remedy. But do not ruin the positive health effects of sunshine with toxic, carcinogenic sunscreens. If your fair skin is exposed to the sun longer than usual, find a truly natural, non-toxic sunscreen.
Instead of watching “Dancing With the Stars”, go out and gaze at stars as far away from light pollution as possible. It may take only a short drive. For a real sense of vastness that you're part of, there's nothing more impressive than a clear night at sea or on desert sands or on a hill far enough from artificial lighting. It's awesome.
And awesome has a way of making you feel more you and better about yourself and life. There's no room for pettiness and negativity or worry when you have an awesome experience with nature. The mind body connection allows physical healing and improved health through positive thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
What about dirt?
The obsession with germs has us quarantined from bolstering our immunity to disease. Our immune systems need practice with trace amounts of natural wild bacteria to familiarize and strengthen them. A couple of studies on small dairy farms in Europe and on Amish farms in the USA concluded that those who grew up on those farms fared far better with health than their urban counterparts, even after they moved into cities themselves.
The studies examined allergies, asthma, and even bowel inflammation with their comparisons. They even discovered that farm raised kids passed on stronger immune systems to their offspring than those raised in overly sanitized areas.
Keep in mind these were farms relatively free of toxic materials that cause neurological damage. Agricultural so-called science has been adulterated to create profits and bad health. That's a topic for another article or book, but it has been covered by some documentaries as well as other written materials.
Natural exposure to “germs” helps build our immune systems, not toxic vaccine injections. Earlier TB outbreaks from milk was caused by crowded dairy farms in urban areas where animals were standing in their own and others excrement. Pasteurizing and injecting lots of antibiotics into dairy cows allows current factory dairy farms to continue the same way despite unhealthy conditions the cows endure.
Those who provide raw milk do not inject their pasture raised cows with antibiotics or GMO bovine “growth hormones”, They simply ensure their animals and milking equipment are in uncrowded clean spaces when not outdoors. Wherever raw milk is legal, these areas are inspected.
Raw milk is not intrinsically unhealthy. It's actually healthier than pasteurized milk, which has its enzymes and nutrients virtually cooked out of existence. Most of the kids and grown adults raised on small and Amish farms probably use raw milk and cheese as part of their diets.
Did you know that a healthy human body contains trillions of microbial bacteria at an ideal ratio of 85% “good bacteria” that support our immune systems to 15% not so good or bad bacteria? Many of the good bacteria are part of soil's microbial content that promote plant growth.
So other than getting a little messy, don't concern yourself with getting germs while grounding. It's suggested you get your hands dirty gardening or working on your yard. Once upon a time, kids played outdoors and got dirty. We were healthier. The germ theory established itself with animal and human poop and pee not getting properly handled. Modern plumbing saved the day from dangerous contagious diseases, not vaccines.
The connection to and with nature however you can manage it is more than merely nice, it's essential for better health.
Why It's Important Also Improve the Environment in Which You Eat and Sleep
Did you know that it's more likely your enclosed dwelling and workspace areas have more air pollutants than outdoors, even in urban settings? The fact that many office work spaces are airtight makes it even worse.
Even if you live in a relatively pristine natural area with very little traffic, no industry, and some open spacing between homes, your indoor air could be more hazardous than outdoors if your windows are closed more than open.
Thanks to cheap press board construction materials, fire proofing chemicals for furniture and bedding, and carpeting or floors laminated with glues and protective chemicals, your dwelling's air is likely to be fairly toxic as those glues and chemicals “off-gas” inside your mostly enclosed home or apartment. Some could include benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene.
Then there may be some household items that are stored inside that act as Trojan Horses for toxic chemicals, some even carcinogenic. Bleaches, commercial detergents, bug sprays or poisons, painting materials, clothes that have been chemically dry cleaned, carpets cleaned with chemicals, and so on. You get the scent, right?
There are ways to lighten your dwelling's toxic load shopping more selectively for non-toxic household cleaning items, avoiding press board furnishings (the glue “off-gases”). Adding indoor plants to your living and or work space goes a long way to minimizing these airborne toxins. We live in toxic times, so it takes some focus, research, and determined effort to ensure we don't become victims of chronic or deadly diseases from toxic overloads. Raw nature is a major solution for our bodily pollution protection.
