Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are aggravating and often painful bacterial infections of any part of the urinary tract. UTIs affect women more often than men, especially younger women. The main agent of these infection is the bacteria E. Coli. Although urine contains a variety of waste products, it does not usually have bacteria in it and when bacteria get into the bladder or kidney and multiply in the urine, they may cause a UTI infection. Fortunately, there are many effective natural remedies for eliminating UTIs.

Though many risk factors have been associated with urinary tract infections, such infections are most common in young sexually active women, where it is estimated that anywhere from 75—90 % of bladder infections are due to sexual activity.

The most common symptoms of a bladder infection are burning with urination (dysuria), frequency of urination, an urge to urinate, without vaginal discharge or significant pain. Other signs of urinary tract infections can include foul smelling urine, urine that appears cloudy and blood in the urine.

* At the first sign of a bladder infection, drink large amounts of purified water to flush bacteria out of the bladder.

* A teaspoon of baking soda in a full glass of water at the outset can help ease the burning sensation. However, baking soda can have a cancelling effect when used with other remedies, especially cranberry juice, and should be used sparingly at any rate..

* Drink cranberry or blueberry juice when you feel a urinary tract infection coming on. Both contain compounds that fight the infection by preventing troublesome bacteria from adhering to the walls of your urinary tract. Down one to two eight-ounce glasses of 100 percent unsweetened cranberry or blueberry juice daily until the infection disappears.

* Alternatively, one can take 2.5 g of cranberry extract capsules (Vaccinium macrocarpum) twice a day with meals.

* Drink two to four ounces of colloidal silver three times a day to quickly knock out most UTIs. Be sure to follow up with a good probiotic to make sure you maintain a good mix of beneficial intestinal flora.

* Wash the vaginal area before and after sex with goldenseal tea. Pour one cup of boiling water over one teaspoon of powdered goldenseal. Cover, let steep until cool, and strain before using.

* Increase vitamin C intake to 500 mg every couple of hours to create a more acidic environment in the bladder and urinary tract, which will discourage bacterial growth. If you experience diarrhea, reduce the amount until you no longer have loose stools.

* To fight infection, take two capsules three times a day of echinacea and Oregon grape root or goldenseal. In acute cases, take a half-teaspoon of a prepared tincture every hour.

* Squeeze about half a cup of lemon juice and drink in the morning when you wake up and repeat daily until the bladder infection is gone.

* Asparagus. take about 5 or 6 asparagus stalks. boil them until squashy. Eat and drink the juice from the pot. Do this about 2 or three times over a few days. It should help clear the infection quickly.

* Take 2 teaspoons of raw apple cider vinegar together with a teaspoon of raw honey two or three times per day.

* Make a tea from parsley leaves as follows: Boil water and pour it in a cup. Use a small pinch of parsley and place it in the cup. Let steep for a few minutes and you can either filter the parsley out or drink it as is. Do not use parsley if you are pregnant, this can/will induce labor. Normally this will ease pain within about 20 minutes.

* Two crandophilius capsules taken four times daily with a glass of water has been reported to remedy bladder infections quickly.

* Drink pau d'arco tea three times a day. Pour boiling water over a tablespoon of the tea and let it steep for about 15 minutes. Drink the tea in conjuction with other remedies for best results. Pau d'arco works for a number of illnesses and has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

* If you have access to a well-stocked herbal supply store: For a more severe infection, combine equal parts of pipsissewa, buchu, echinacea, and uva ursi tinctures. Take 20 drops every two hours for the first two days and then one teaspoon four times a day until the infection clears. Drink a demulcent tea such as marshmallow root at the same time to counter the strong antiseptic effect of uva ursi.

* A homeopathic remedy for urinary tract infections is "cantharsis", which can be bought online or at homeopathic retail outlets.

* Other items which may help include cashews, almonds, and rhubarb.
