Life-saving wheatgrass a nutritional superfood - What you need to know

(The Best Years in Life) Wheatgrass is a highly nutritious superfood whose health benefits range from stimulating the metabolism to encourage weight loss, to healing tumors, alkalizing acidosis, treating ulcers, lowering blood pressure, and removing toxins -- to name a few. Most people who consume wheatgrass do it by making wheatgrass juice in a power juicer to drink alone or mixed with other organic fruits and vegetables.

Wheatgrass has a strong, pungent flavor that some people find unpleasant; however, its health benefits are unparalleled for cleansing and overall wellness -- and overlooking the taste is a simple trade-off. Some folks follow a wheatgrass shot with a delicious mix of freshly juiced carrots or apples to take the sting out of the taste. Wheatgrass is used as a supplement in so many different health conditions, and its full range of benefits have not yet been established.

How to consume wheatgrass juice

Whether buying freshly juiced wheatgrass or making it yourself, start with no more than one ounce a day. It takes time to get used to its purgative properties, so don’t overdue it.

If making your own pure juice, there is no special recipe other than using one of the excellent masticating power wheatgrass juicers to obtain optimal benefits. A single auger, masticating juicer extracts the juice from the wheatgrass very slowly, preventing oxidation and preserving the maximum amounts of enzymes, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

As you become accustomed to drinking wheatgrass juice, continue to consume one or two ounces daily up to bowel tolerance. Back off the quantity if you develop loose stools. Increase the amount consumed after waiting for two to three weeks and then add one more ounce per day to the diet. Drink no more than two ounces at one time up to a total amount of 4 ounces per day.

If you are sensitive and experience digestive discomfort or the emergence of other symptoms, cut back on the dosage. Because wheatgrass is a natural cleansing agent, it can cause what’s known as a “healing crisis,” where various health symptoms rise to the surface to be cleared. Certain highly sensitive individuals may have to consume it in very small doses amounting to one-half ounce a day for many weeks until they are comfortable raising the quantity to one ounce or more at a time. The amount consumed is based solely on individual tolerance.

Drink raw wheatgrass juice straight or diluted with distilled water one hour before meals or two hours after. It is best taken on an empty stomach to allow for maximum absorption. Avoid drinking at bed time in case it upsets your stomach.

Because wheatgrass juice stimulates the metabolism and balances the thyroid gland, it can help you lose weight. It enriches the blood producing additional enzymes, helping food digest more quickly and improving motility of the digestive tract.
