Which Milk is the Best Milk?
by Barbara Minton
(The Best Years in Life) Today’s common wisdom says the only foods worth eating are fruits and vegetables, so many health conscious people are buying ‘milk’ made from vegetable sources and turning their backs on the animal milk that has nourished children and adults for the last 7,500 years. One big reason for this switch is the deplorable conditions found in some of the factory farms that produce much of the milk sold today. So is making the switch to vegetable derived ‘milk’ a smart idea? Let’s take a look.
Soy is used in Asian cultures only if it is fermented, a process that eliminates phytate, a powerful enzyme inhibitor. Phytate in the unfermented soybeans used to make soy milk actually robs the body of nutrients. Soy is loaded with isoflavones, which act like unbalanced estrogen in the body, creating one of the scenarios repeatedly documented as causing breast cancer as well as fat gain, fibrocystic breast disease, and uterine fibroids Virtually all soy milk is made from genetically modified soybeans unless the container bears a certifying seal saying its contents is organic.
This so called milk is mostly water, rice (a high glycemic food), genetically modified vegetable oils, and tapioca starch. There is little to be had in the way of nutrition.
Almond milk has been gaining favor recently, probably because people have been led to think it’s made with healthy almonds. However, commercially prepared almond milks contain only about 2 percent almonds. Pacific is an organic brand of almond milk found in healthy image markets such as Whole Foods. Here’s what else it contains:
Carrageenan – an indigestible thickening agent extracted from algae that has been shown in animal studies to induce inflammation throughout the intestinal tract. Several natural health advocates including Dr. Andrew Weil have cautioned that carrageenan is toxic to the digestive system. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a part of the World Health Organization, has classified carrageenan as a probably human carcinogen.
Rice starch – another extender and thickening agent with almost no nutritional value.
Synthetic Vitamin A palmitate – a lab created chemical posing as a vitamin. It cannot be recognized or used by the body in the same way that natural vitamins can. It reaches toxic levels quickly, even in small amounts, and should never be given to children. Synthetic vitamins are what ‘researchers’ use in their studies when they want to show that vitamins are dangerous.
Vitamin D2 – made industrially from the irradiation of yeast. As with synthetic vitamin A, Vitamin D2 is not the version the body needs, and it should never be given to children because it also reaches toxic levels quickly. Children should be allowed to play in the sunshine year round without sunscreen in order to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D3, the form needed by the human body.
There is no healthier drink than real milk
As you can see, there is not much to like about vegetable derived ‘milk’, and there is the potential for several bad outcomes in those who drink them. They are highly processed and seriously lacking in nutrition.
So what is the best milk? It’s the real milk men, women and children have been drinking throughout time. Real milk is a traditional food with a long history underwritten by nature that corporate America can’t match. Look at the photos of people in history books and see how healthy and trim real milk drinkers were.
The best milk is raw milk from grass-fed cows. This was the kind everyone drank until the early part of the past century, and it nourished and healed countless millions of people.
What’s so special about raw milk? Here’s a list of what’s in it.
The best ways to get grass-fed raw milk are to strike up a relationship with a nearby farmer or join a cooperative that can produce it for you. This may take some time and energy to get set up, but it is well worth the trouble.
Some of the benefits of raw milk will be lost as you go down in quality. The next best is un-homogenized organic milk, which is usually only found in healthy image grocery stores.
The milk found in conventional supermarkets is the least desirable because the animals may not have been grass-fed at all, and it is pasteurized and homogenized. It may have even come from factory farms. But you know what? Even this milk provides an amazing array of benefits not seen in other foods, and it puts the veggie impostors to shame.
